Manufactured Final Copy
almost 7 years ago – Thu, Nov 30, 2017 at 12:32:59 AM

Cool news today: I got the master copies of the game from the manufacturing run.

The manufacturer sent me two copies: one of the Kickstarter version with metal coins, and one of the retail version with plastic tokens. The promo cards were alongside in a separate bit of plastic wrap.

Components all looked good. I remember playing this game with pieces cut out of cheap cardstock for a very long time, so feeling the quality of these materials is an absolute pleasure.

One thing I did notice is that the manufactured version printed a little darker than the pre-production copy. Here you can see the pre-production copy on the left, and one of the mass manufactured copies on the right. The color difference is subtle, especially in the photo, but definitely there.

Fortunately, the account rep at the manufacturer had warned me that the manufactured version would print darker, so I lightened the art on some of the pieces, like the Ancient Temple. Otherwise they would have been mostly solid black, instead of just enough black to be atmospheric.

All the promo components came out very well. It's super cool to see the art on the legendary thieves and animal companions, especially.

I'm very glad I redesigned the box based on backer feedback. Everything fits in here very well, even with the promo components, with enough room for a potential expansion somewhere down the line.

I'm going to be going over these copies of the game with my account manager at Panda Games Manufacturing, and then the logistics phase of this operation begins.

I'll keep you posted.

Cheers,

Adam

Add-Ons Delivery Begins
about 7 years ago – Tue, Nov 21, 2017 at 01:25:11 PM

Quick update for people who ordered certain add-ons:

  • All hats have shipped, and should be arriving within the next week for US backers and 1-2 weeks for international backers
  • The Gallery art book PDF is almost done, and will likely be going out to people in 1-2 weeks (essentially just needs proofing at this point, but I'm going to be traveling for Thanksgiving tomorrow and won't be back to my computer until next week, so that's going to delay things a little bit)

For more general updates, manufacturing is on track, though the manufacturer did make a little bit of a mistake and didn't make enough overs for the dice and coin bags (I mentioned this in the Kickstarter comments when it happened, but not everyone reads those, so here it is again). This won't delay shipping at all, but might impact my ability to provide replacement parts until they get me the rest of the overage components, which should take about a month. So try not to lose the dice immediately, is what I'm saying.

I'll let you know if anything else comes up.

Cheers,

Adam

Grind Your Knives, We're Almost There
about 7 years ago – Fri, Nov 03, 2017 at 12:35:56 AM

Hello, friend.

At this point pre-orders are closed, and no further changes to orders can be made. I do have one small correction to make to what I said previously--it turns out that you can still change addresses after orders are locked and cards are charged. Addresses can be adjusted right up until the moment we ship the box out to you, in fact, so that gives us some additional flexibility.

Please note that if you added add-ons in BackerKit, and your card failed to charge, you'll have gotten an email letting you know that you need to fix the problem--if you haven't done so, please check in on that.

I also have an updated timeline from the manufacturer and fulfillment companies I’m working with. Unfortunately, it once again means that you might get your game a little later than I thought you would. Here’s what we’re working with:

  • First week of December: Manufacturing complete, master copy sent to me for final approval
  • Mid-December: Final assembly complete (putting all those game components into the right boxes--this was the step that I forgot about when I said that we could get the games to you in December)
  • Freight: 2-5 weeks (actual time can vary widely)
  • Delivery: 2-3 weeks

Every time one of these things pushes back the delivery date, all I can do is apologize and try to figure out a way to do it better next time. The lesson this time, I guess, is to double check what your account manager means when he says “all components will be finished manufacturing by this date,” because that doesn’t necessarily mean “ready to ship.”

Anyway, it’s looking like January might be a more accurate estimate for when game boxes will be delivered, because I missed a week or two in my original estimate. In the meantime, I’m trying to speed things up by looking into a way to ship to Australia and Asia directly from the factory in China. Someone mentioned in the comments that the UK fulfillment center I'm using for international orders tends to ship stuff outside of the UK first so that everything arrives at about the same time, so hopefully using another center for those orders will help both Asian/Australian backers and UK backers get their games faster.

Also, I'm going to be sending out hats to the handful of people who ordered them within the next few days, and the art book will be delivered in November to anyone who added The Gallery to their pledge, or who went for the Wealthy Sponsor Pack. So I’m not leaving you completely bereft until January. Things are starting to move out the door.

I can't wait to get this game to you, I really can't...

I'll let you know when I have further news.

Cheers,

Adam

Important Update - Deadlines and Manufacturing
about 7 years ago – Sat, Sep 16, 2017 at 05:22:07 PM

Hello, friend. Big news this time: I got the second pre-production copy that the manufacturer sent me, everything checked out, and we’re finally going to manufacturing.

The new box, a bit smaller and much less liable to have your components rattle around.
The new box, a bit smaller and much less liable to have your components rattle around.

This means that I have a pretty firm timeline for delivery now, barring any further disasters and disruptions, so I’m setting a deadline for any last address changes, add-ons, or other updates that you might want to make to your order on BackerKit. Any changes to addresses or orders must be in by November 1st at the absolute latest. After that I make no guarantees that I will be able to update your address in time, because things might very well already be in transit to you.

If you need to update your address or other information, you can do so by logging into BackerKit or sending me an email or message on Kickstarter with your updated information.

Sorry that it’s taken me so long to get to this point, and sorry that it’s taken me so long to provide you with this update--I know I promised monthly missives until the game was in your hands, but I've been absolutely and entirely without the time to do so for the past month. Between getting a new job, moving almost three thousand miles across the country, pushing the game the final distance towards manufacturing, and preparing to present another game at the Boston Festival of Indie Games next weekend, I've been stretched a little thin recently.

But things are moving along, and it won’t be too much longer now.

Showing off the art on the inside walls of the box, and the Jail/Graveyard mat. Also featuring, in the background, some debris from my apartment that I haven't cleaned up yet.

Remember. November 1st. A little early for the gunpowder, treason, and plot, but we'll get there I'm sure.

Cheers,

Adam

July Update: The Final Schedule (Probably)
over 7 years ago – Thu, Aug 03, 2017 at 01:49:51 AM

Hello again.

Another month has gone by, and once again I'm further from delivering the game to you than I'd like. Even further than I'd thought, actually, according to the email I got half an hour ago from my project manager at the manufacturer.

I've been telling people that we'd probably be shipping the games in August, September at the latest. Which is what I had thought was going to happen, because I guess I wasn't paying attention as the schedule I was working from kept slipping. I realized that recently as more and more people were messaging me asking for updates, so I checked in with the project manager, and it's, uh, going to be a lot later than I thought.

Bottom line is, it's actually looking like the games will be shipping to backers in December.

That said, unless anything completely unforeseen comes up (knock on wood), this is definitely the final schedule. I spent July sorting out all the little issues I had with the pre-production copy of the game that the manufacturer sent me, and with those cleared away we're good for final checks and full manufacturing. I hate that we're going to get caught up in the December shipping madness as everyone gets last-minute presents for the holidays, but if nothing goes drastically wrong you should have the game in your hands by the end of the year.

A lot of things were finalized or tweaked this month. For example, here are the final sculpts and colors for the metal coins.

Which is six months after I said I'd get it to you, unfortunately. I'm very, very sorry about that. In preparing for this project I'd read so much about Kickstarter creators delaying projects long after they'd promised them, and I feel terrible that I ended up falling into that trap myself despite my precautions. All I can really do now is pay attention to the rest of the process so there are no further delays, and swear to do better next time.

Thanks for bearing with me thus far.

Cheers,

Adam
